Evidence of disruption and danger from climate change is mounting worldwide. Yet the difficulties of changing behaviors that seem to fuel it are immense. Where do we begin? What can any of us do about it? Join leaders in the field of climate action who have helped others find a way to make a difference will tell us about a variety of ways each of us can take meaningful action to combat global climate change.
Dr. Anthony Cortese, co-founder of the Crane Institute of Sustainability and the Intentional Endowments Network, will lead the evening’s conversation. Dr. Cortese has been actively engaged in public policy and educational transformation on climate change for several decades. In 1993, he founded Second Nature, the Boston-based advocacy organization committed to promoting sustainability through higher education, along with U.S. Senator John Kerry, Teresa Heinz Kerry and Bruce Droste. Dr, Cortese served as Second Nature’s president from March 1993-August 2012. Prior to his work with Second Nature, Dr. Cortese was the Massachusetts Commissioner of Environmental Protection before assuming the role of Dean of the Environmental Studies at Tufts University.
Thea Sebastian, College ‘08, HLS ‘16, will join Dr. Cortese to discuss the Harvard Forward campaign (HF). The campaign is a coalition of alumni, students, and faculty seeking to elect candidates to the University's Board of Overseers. Its goal is to move Harvard toward divesting from investment in fossil fuels and committing more resources to climate-focused initiatives.
Thea Sebastian, Esq. currently serves as Policy Counsel for the Civil Rights Corps where she leads policy efforts to transform the American criminal legal system. Prior to her legal career, Sebastian was an educator with Teach for America, serving as a special education teacher at a South Bronx middle school. She is a graduate of Harvard University ('08) and Harvard Law School (JD '16). She is currently a candidate for the University's Board of Overseers, nominated by the Harvard Forward campaign.
