Claire Boine, MPP 2017, will interview Becca Ricks, founder of Tendernet and Researcher at the Mozilla Foundation. They will discuss the relationship between power and technology, a feminist internet, and how design can be a site of intervention for a more inclusive and participatory society.
About Our Speakers
Becca Ricks (she/her) is a researcher, designer, and technologist whose work brings a feminist lens to the development of computational systems. She is a researcher at Mozilla, where she advocates for greater community oversight and control of AI, with a focus on contestable systems. Becca is a founding member of tendernet, an intersectional feminist collective exploring critical and speculative design practices in AI. She also serves on the steering committee for The Partnership on AI's About ML project and was a 2017-2018 Ford-Mozilla Open Web Fellow at Human Rights Watch. Previously, she worked as a design technologist prototyping interactive voice experiences. She holds a master’s degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP).
Claire Boine (she/her) is a Research Scholar in Public Policy at the Boston University School of Public Health and a PhD candidate in Law at the University of Ottawa. She is also the director of the Women and AI project within the Accountable AI in a Global Context research Chair at UOttawa and a Research Associate at the Artificial and Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute. Her dissertation focuses on gender, sex, and technology. She holds a law degree from Nantes University (France) and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University (2017), as well as an MA in political science, a BA in history, and a graduate diploma in conflict analysis. She has always worked on risk mitigation through the analysis of complex systems using mixed methods drawn from her interdisciplinary background. Her research interests include systems of interaction between life and technology such as weapons, artificial life, and artificial intelligence. She is also especially interested in these systems as they relate to existential risks.
