For the last eighty years, the international system that was created after World War II with U.S. leadership, while far from perfect, has provided a degree of stability in international affairs. What might the return to power of President Donald Trump mean for these foundational arrangements?

Jim Gomes MPP/JD '79 has spent his career at the intersection of public policy, politics, academia, and law. After several years of law practice, he played significant roles on behalf of major figures in Massachusetts Democratic politics and government including John Kerry, Michael Dukakis, Evelyn Murphy, and Deval Patrick. He served as President of the Environmental League of Massachusetts for fourteen years and later held research staff leadership positions at Clark University -- where he also taught courses in the Political Science Department -- and at MIT until his retirement in 2022. He has written frequently on political and policy topics and has been sharing his observations at HKS Leadership Breakfasts since 2009.
