HKSNEAA Reception: The U.S.' Changing Role in the World
The Harvard Kennedy School New England Alumni Association and the Harvard Club of Boston are pleased to invite you to the HKSNEAA's Annual Dinner with keynote speaker Nicholas Burns, who has served as the Department of State's Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (2005-2008), U.S. Ambassador to NATO (2001-2005), U.S. Ambassador to Greece (1997-2001) and State Department Spokesman (1995-1997). Burns is currently the Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Professor Burns will discuss the changing nature of American power, expectations of the future global balance of power, changing cooperation and competition among the world's powerful nations, and ideas on how countries can collaborate to address major challenges. These challenges include the avoidance of conflict in the South China Sea, limiting nuclear proliferation, enhancing cooperation on energy and climate issues, addressing war in the Middle East, and building more effective economic cooperation. Leadership Breakfast: Leadership through “Project-Based Policy Development”
Please join us for a discussion with Bradford Swing, Director of Energy Policy for the City of Boston and Kennedy School alumnus (MC-MPA’94), who will use the Heifetz framework for understanding leadership. He will discuss how a thematic sequence of public events related to the City of Boston’s first green building provided an example of project-based policy development. The story behind the sequence and strategy—the complexity of green building policy and the complementary roles of Mayor and staff—illuminate Heifetz’s leadership framework, particularly two key theoretical distinctions, between leadership and authority, and between technical and adaptive problems. The pilot project identified the adaptive nature of green building policy change, provided a framework for education and partnership, and created a process to keep politically viable progress on track. Halpern is the Chief Executive of the Behavioural Insights Team and Board Director. He has led the team since its inception in 2010. Prior to that, David was the founding Director of the Institute for Government and between 2001 and 2007 was the Chief Analyst at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit. Why the party system has to go and what should replace it? A Discussion with David Berlin and Archon Fung
The Party system, Washington wrote in 1797, "opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of political parties Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another". Washington's remarks seem strangely compelling and prescient given Mueller's current Investigation into Trump's alleged ties with Russia. One might have expected that the press and the pundits recall Washington's warning. But they haven't. Perhaps because pundits worry that undermining the party system may undermine the Republic as a whole. But perhaps there is a good alternative to the (two) party system. Prior to becoming Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, Hassett was the State Farm James Q. Wilson Chair in American Politics and Culture and Director of Research for Domestic Policy at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. He was John McCain's chief economic adviser in the 2000 presidential primaries and an economic adviser to the campaigns of George W.
